Night Blessing with Irony for the English speakers and Portuguese speakers.

A Night Blessing for the Exhausted and the Overly-Woke

(A Meditation for the End of the Day)

So, here we are again. Another day down, another cosmic battle fought in the trenches of the grocery store line and the email inbox. The world tells you to wind down, to find your "zen," to breathe deeply. But let’s be honest—you just spent the last twelve hours trying to convince your soul that the printer jam wasn't a personal attack.

Tonight, let’s look at the text. It’s a bit of a theological cocktail. On one hand, Daniel assures us, "The people who know their God shall stand firm and take action" (Daniel 11:32). It sounds so militant, so heroic. "Stand firm!" it says. But the irony of our modern life is that we often spend our "standing firm" energy on deciding whether to stand firm in the checkout line or take the action of abandoning the cart entirely. True strength isn't always the warrior’s charge; sometimes, it’s the stubbornness to remain soft when the world has taught you to be cynical. It’s knowing Who you know, even when that knowledge feels like a faint echo in a noisy room.

And then we have the Revelation text, a double-edged sword of comfort and disquiet: "He who has the key of David... opens and no one will shut, and shuts and no one opens... Because you have kept My word of perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing" (Revelation 3:7, 10). There is a deep, sardonic comfort in that, isn't there? He holds the keys. He opens doors you thought were brick walls, and, more frustratingly, He closes doors you’ve been kicking for years. The sarcasm of life is that we spend our days trying to be the bouncer of our own fate, only to realize we don't even own the keys to the club. Perseverance isn't just gritting your teeth; it's the quiet, sometimes humorous, surrender to the fact that the Master is in charge of the locks. The "hour of testing" will come for the world, but He promises a refuge—not necessarily a removal from the mess, but a protection through it. That’s the loving caveat: the storm will rage, but you won't be swept away.

This brings us to today’s sermon, the glorious mess of John 9. Jesus spits in the dirt. He makes mud. He smears it on a blind man's eyes. Seriously. The King of the Universe used the stuff stuck to the bottom of your shoe to perform a miracle. “When Mud Becomes a Miracle.”

Here is the profound, loving sarcasm for your night: God works through the mundane, the gross, the ordinary. You think a miracle is a lightning bolt from heaven? No. It’s spit and dirt. It is the awkward phone call you had to make. It is the mundane task you did with love even though no one thanked you. It is the tired prayer you breathed into your pillow.

So, tonight, as you lie down, acknowledge the absurdity. You are tired. You have fought battles unseen and lost a few skirmishes that were utterly trivial. You have keys you can't find and doors that won't budge. And yet, you are loved with a ferocity that makes the universe blink.

Blessing:

May you rest in the holy satire of grace—that the God who holds the keys to eternity uses mud to heal.

May you find the strength to stop kicking the closed doors and start noticing the open ones, even if they lead to a quiet room rather than a grand stage.

And when the hour of testing comes, may you not rely on the clarity of your sight, but on the hands that are not afraid to get dirty for you.

Sleep peacefully in the irony that you are most powerful when you are most surrendered. The Maker of the mud is holding your night. And He is enough.

Goodnight, you beautiful, complicated, miracle-in-the-making mess.

Jesus cospe no chão. Ele faz lama.
