A Gaúcho's Blessing for the Night
(With the scent of campfire smoke and the quiet hoofbeats of the herd)
"Crioulo, descansa." (Native one, rest.)
The sun’s last fire sinks behind the coxilhas (roling hills), and
the Southern Cross glitters like frost on the pampas. Your day was long—maybe
heavy, maybe light—but now the open sky bends over you like a warm poncho.
The old Psalm sings in a guitarra tonight:
"I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for
me" (Psalm 57:2).
See? Even when the trail gets muddy, even when the bagual (wild
horse) of worry bucks in your chest—there’s a Hand that holds the reins. Not a
stranger’s hand. The Hand that measured the plains and counts every hair on
your mate gourd. He’s not finished with you. Your
purpose is still growing, like a calf in the womb of dawn.
And Jesus—ah, the Gaúcho of Galilee—He leaned over the table
of His friends and said:
"Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will
receive, that your joy may be full" (John 16:24).
So before you close your eyes, pede com confiança (ask with
trust). Not for a fat herd or a rainless sky—but for joy that roots deep
as cepillo wood. Ask for the laughter that bubbles up even
when the chimarrão is cold. Ask like a child who knows the father keeps the
best biscoitos (cookies) in the tin.
And then—remember the sermon that still warms my bones:
"You are God’s temple… God’s Spirit dwells in you" (1
Corinthians 3:16-17).
The preacher said it plain: Your life is not a ramshackle corral—it’s a
chapel. Every scar, every gray hair, every silly joke you tell, every
tear you wiped away for a friend—that’s tijolo (brick)
and altar (altar). The fire that tests it? That’s not to
destroy you. It’s to burn off the dry thistles and leave the gold shining.
So tonight, guri or guria (boy
or girl), lay your head down.
- The
flock is safe.
- The
stars are whistling their old tune.
- And
the Lord of the plains is polishing you like a precious stone for His
temple.
If you stumbled today, He’s already brushed the dust off
your knees.
If you loved well, He’s already carved that love into His walls.
If you feel small—bah, that’s perfect. The best fires start from a
single spark.
My
blessing over you:
és morada do Altíssimo."
(May the God of the field cover you as frost covers the grass — soft,
silent, life-giving. May He answer your request with more than you dare dream.
And when you wake, may you feel in your chest the echo of divine building: you
are temple, you are treasure, you are the dwelling of the Most High.)
Boa noite,
companheiro. A lua já aponta o rumo do amanhã.
(Good night, companion. The moon already points the way to tomorrow.)
— Um abraço gaúcho (A gaúcho embrace),
with the smell of wet earth and the certainty that He who began a good work in
you will carry it on—even through the night. 🧉🌾
Minha
és morada do Altíssimo."
Boa noite,
companheiro.
