From All Nations: A Blessing for Heritage Day
As the sun sets on this Heritage Day, and the sounds of our
diverse nation begin to quiet, may a loving and gentle peace settle over you.
We give thanks for the rich tapestry of our heritage, for
the many colours, languages, and cultures that make up the beautiful mosaic of
South Africa. We celebrate the good humor and resilient spirit that binds us, a
spirit born from learning to understand and love one another across our
different ethnic groups.
This evening, we hold onto the promise of Ezekiel 36:36:
"Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have
rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I the Lord
have spoken, and I will do it." We claim this promise for our land –
that God is in the business of rebuilding, restoring, and replanting hope where
there has been desolation. May we see this restoration in our families, our
communities, and our nation.
And we look forward with hope to the vision of Revelation
7:9-10, a glimpse of our ultimate heritage: "a great multitude that
no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing
before the throne and before the Lamb... And they cried out in a loud voice:
'Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.'"
This is our destiny – a diverse, unified chorus worshipping together. May that
heavenly reality inspire our earthly journey.
Let the message from last Sunday's sermon on 2 Timothy
1:7-10 be our anchor for the week ahead. We are reminded that "God
has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound
mind."
So, as you rest tonight, do not be troubled by fear or
anxiety about our country's challenges. Instead, receive God's gifts:
- His
Power, to be a force for positive change and reconciliation.
- His
Love, to embrace those who are different from you with gentleness and
understanding.
- His
Sound Mind, to think clearly, to act with wisdom, and to extend grace.
This power is not our own; it is the power of the Gospel, "who
has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done
but because of his own purpose and grace." (2 Tim 1:9). This grace was
given to us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time and has now been
revealed through our Saviour, who has destroyed death and brought life and
immortality to light.
May you sleep in the knowledge that you are part of a great
and diverse family, both here on earth and in heaven. May you rest in the
power, love, and sound mind that come from our gracious God.
Blessings on your night, and may the peace of our diverse
and unifying heritage in Christ be with you all.
Amen.
De Todas as Etnias: Uma
Bênção para o Dia do Patrimônio Cultural
Enquanto o
reconstruir, restaurar e replantar a esperança onde houve desolação.
unificado adorando juntos. Que essa realidade celestial inspire nossa jornada
terrena.
terra quanto no céu.
do nosso Deus gracioso.
