A Blessing for the Night in English and Portuguese

“The Stone Has Been Rolled Away: Rest, God Is in Control”

On Psalm 104:4, Matthew 28:2, and Matthew 10:26–33

May the peace of the Lord settle over you tonight, gently and quietly, like a wind that knows where it is going. After all, someone has to know what is happening, and thankfully, it doesn't always have to be us.

Psalm 104:4 tells us that God makes the winds His messengers and flames of fire His servants. There is something rather comforting about that thought. Even the winds that seem wild and unpredictable are not beyond God's reach. What looks like chaos to us is never beyond His authority. So perhaps tonight you can stop trying to hold everything together. The world will keep turning, even while you are asleep. You are allowed to let go for a while.

And then there is that wonderful little detail in Matthew 28:2. An angel comes down from heaven, an earthquake shakes the ground, the stone is rolled away from the tomb, and then the angel sits on it. Yes, sits on it! That enormous stone, sealed and guarded, the very thing that seemed to stand between death and life, becomes nothing more than a place to rest.

I have always liked that image. The angel doesn't rush around or look worried. There is no frantic explanation, no desperate attempt to convince anyone. The work is done, the stone has been moved, and the angel simply takes a seat. It is almost as if heaven is saying: When God has acted, you don't need to panic.

Perhaps we could learn something from that tonight. Not the earthquake, of course, but the sitting down!

Last Sunday's sermon, based on Matthew 10:26–33, carried the title “Do Not Be Afraid: Standing Firm in the Gospel.” And there is a certain irony in Jesus telling His disciples not to be afraid while going on to speak quite openly about persecution, rejection, suffering and even death. He doesn't pretend that following Him will always be easy. He doesn't offer a life without trouble.

Instead, He reminds us of something far more important: our lives are never outside the Father's care.

Jesus speaks about the sparrows, those little birds that seem so ordinary that hardly anyone would give them a second thought. Yet not even one of them falls to the ground without the Father's knowledge. And then comes the wonderful promise: “You are worth more than many sparrows.”

It is a simple image, but a powerful one. If God pays attention to the smallest creatures, how much more does He care for you?

Perhaps that is something worth remembering before closing your eyes tonight. God knows the things that trouble you, the conversations you keep replaying in your mind, the decisions you have not yet made, and even the worries you find difficult to put into words. You don't have to explain everything to Him. He already knows.

So, as this day comes to an end, receive this blessing:

May you rest tonight with the quiet confidence of the angel sitting on the stone, knowing that what seemed impossible is already in God's hands. May the winds that serve Him gently clear away the worries that have gathered in your mind. May His refining fire burn away whatever you do not need to carry into tomorrow: old grudges, unnecessary fears, regrets and arguments that exist only in your imagination.

May you remember that the God who commands the winds, governs the storms and rolls away the stones of death is also the God who notices a little sparrow falling from a tree. And He certainly notices you. Even on the days when you feel ordinary, forgotten or a little less courageous than you would like to be.

May the words “Do not be afraid” become more than a command to be brave. May they become a gentle reminder that you are known, loved and held in the hands of the Father. Your worth does not depend on how strong you feel tonight, how much you have accomplished today, or how well you have managed to keep everything under control. You belong to Him. And that is enough.

Sleep peacefully.

The angels are on duty, the stone has been rolled away, and the sparrows are still in God's care.

And so are you.

Good night.

Você pertence a Deus.

Boa noite!
