"Rest in Peace, Tomorrow We Continue the Journey"
My friends and fellow travellers on this long
journey towards freedom,
The night is upon us. Another day has come to an end. We
have done what we could, carried what we were able to carry, and perhaps left a
few things unfinished. That is part of being human. So, before you close your
eyes tonight, allow me to share a few words with you. Not as a distant prayer,
but as a blessing for the journey we still have ahead.
The prophet Isaiah reminds us that the fast God desires is
not simply about giving something up. It is about opening our hearts and our
lives to others: sharing our bread with the hungry, welcoming those who have
no home, clothing those who are in need, and refusing to turn away from our
fellow human beings.
Jesus speaks of the same calling in the Gospel: “I was
hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”
There is something deeply beautiful about these words. They
remind us that faith is not measured only by what we say or how often we pray,
but also by how we treat one another. When we share our food, open our doors,
or make room for someone who feels forgotten, we do more than perform an act of
kindness. We encounter Christ himself. And we remind one another that nobody
should have to walk through this world feeling that they do not belong.
But we also know that this is not always easy. There are
days when fear gets the better of us. We worry about those who are different
from us, about having enough to share, about our own security, and about what
tomorrow might bring. Sometimes, after a long day, we simply feel that we have
little left to give.
Jesus knows our fears. He reminds us that not even a sparrow
falls to the ground outside the Father's care. Even the hairs on our heads are
counted. And then he says something wonderfully simple: “Do not be afraid;
you are worth more than many sparrows.”
I have come to believe that courage does not mean living
without fear. It means refusing to let fear have the final word. It means
finding the strength to do what is right, even when the road ahead is
uncertain. We can do that because we are not forgotten or abandoned. We are
known, loved, and held in the hands of God.
And that is a good place to rest tonight.
So, as the day draws to a close, receive these ancient words
of blessing. They are words that have accompanied generations through sorrow
and joy, through difficult journeys and quiet moments of grace. They are words
of peace that once brought light to an old man's face in his final hours:
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be
gracious to you.
May the Lord look upon you with kindness and give you
peace.
May the peace of God, which is greater than anything we can
fully understand, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. May you have a
quiet night, a restful sleep, and the assurance that you are never alone.
And when morning comes, may you find the strength to begin
again. May there be bread in your hands to share with the hungry, a welcome for
the stranger, and an open heart for those who need a little kindness. May you
face the day with courage, not because you have all the answers, but because
you know whose hands hold your life.
Go well, my friends. Rest in peace. And tomorrow, when
the sun rises, may we find the strength to continue our long walk together.
Amen.
“Descansem em Paz, Amanhã
Continuaremos a Caminhada”
Meus
amigos, companheiros e irmãos de caminhada nesta longa jornada rumo à
liberdade,
A noite
chegou.
terminar. Isso também faz parte da vida. Por isso, antes de fechar os olhos
nesta noite, permitam-me compartilhar algumas palavras.
comer; tive sede, e vocês me deram de beber; fui estrangeiro, e vocês me
acolheram.”
Há algo
profundamente bonito nessas palavras.
paz, meus amigos. Descansem tranquilos. E amanhã, quando o sol nascer, que
encontremos novamente forças para continuar juntos nossa longa caminhada.
Amém.
